Position Overview

The HR Services Team within Human Resources is currently seeking a Full-time Regular Director, HR Services.

Reporting to the Associate Vice-President Human Resources, the Director of HR Services is responsible for providing strategic HR leadership to ensure that the support provided by the HR Services team is effective, adds value to the organization, and aligns with the overall strategic direction of the institution and the respective faculties and units within.


This position establishes and maintains positive relationships with key University stakeholders in order to provide operational leadership to and oversee all related Human Resource programs and services. This position requires the skilled ability to influence others and lead a team of professionals through the continual implementation and enhancement of the integrated service delivery model.
Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

Accountable for contributing to the development, implementation and evaluation of overall HR strategic and operational plans reflect the short and long term operational needs of the University
Align HR Services' initiatives to the University and overall Human Resources mission, vision, goals and strategic direction
Build and continuously improve our focus on customer service and understanding of clients' service delivery needs
Ensure the operations of HR Services support the service delivery model, guiding principles and vision of Human Resources and the University of Calgary
Provide leadership through effective communication, ethical decision making, and commitment to achieving established goals and objectives, ensuring outcome measurements and standards are enforced
Create and build commitment to the vision for HR Services through effective communication strategies
Serve as a role model in the development of an organizational culture and promotion of the vision for HR Services
Actively develop close partnerships with the Deans and Senior Leadership, HR leadership team, and service providers as well as other University of Calgary departments including Information Technology, Finance, Communications and front-line management
Provide mentoring and leadership to a team of HR Partners and Advisors, enabling them to deliver professional, quality, responsive service to assigned clients
Ensure that HR Services staff are motivated, empowered and encouraged to identify innovative approaches to enhance and continuously improve organizational performance
Foster a culture of excellence in the delivery of customer service with a focus on building positive relationships with the academic community, the HR Services team, and other areas within the HR Centers of Expertise
Ensure the strategic use of human resources in providing the most effective and efficient delivery of services
Develop succession plans and mentorship strategies to ensure assigned HR Services employees are engaged and encouraged to grow into positions of greater opportunity and accountability
Ability to initiate, implement and support new or modified approaches, practices and processes in the organization
Recognize need for change across service areas and sets priorities accordingly. Engage key stakeholders in change process, understands the impact on both internal and external stakeholders and manages risks and benefits accordingly
Manage the overall operating and capital budgets for HR Services; by planning and determining allocation of resources, authorize and control expenditures
Promote an environment that fosters quality improvement and a culture of safety for staff
Qualifications / Requirements:

A minimum of 10 years of progressively responsible HR generalist professional experience, including a minimum of 5 years' experience in a leadership capacity
Experience is leading an HR Partner organization is a strong asset
Experience in Academic HR is a strong asset
A strong technical HR skill set with knowledge of employment, privacy, and other relevant legislation
Bachelor's degree in Business, Management, or a related field is required; an advanced degree is preferred (Master's in OD, Industrial/Organizational Psychology, Human Resources or MBA)
Proven ability to foster partnerships, exercise influence, and to achieve organizational goals within a large, diverse organization
Ability to foster a climate of cooperation amongst, and build solid relationships with senior leaders
Leadership skills, including demonstrated ability and comfort with decision making responsibilities, coaching and teaching, and the ability to inspire and build confidence in others
Experience in strategic planning, policy development, and program management
Effective communicator with a client focused orientation and commitment to providing sustainable and quality services
Demonstrated ability to manage change and create innovative solutions for complex and diverse issues
Demonstrated strong problem solving skills is required
Knowledge of Human Resource Information Systems (HRIS) systems
Professional designation (CHRP or CHRL) is required
