Job Overview
Reporting to the director, mine geotechnical services, you will be responsible to provide expert advice and recommendations to senior management and mine inspectors on all matters pertaining to the design, construction and permitting of a wide range of mine site components and structures which raise geotechnical issues, including tailings impoundments, waste dumps, stockpiles, open pit slopes, dykes and sumps. You will supervise both technical staff as well as contract professional geotechnical engineers.
Key Accountabilities
Plan and oversee geotechnical site investigations to determine existing and subsurface conditions, including site reconnaissance, drilling supervision, sample characterization
Determine required field sampling and laboratory testing requirements and ensuring proper documentation of results
Interpret and analyze field and laboratory results for use in design
Provide geotechnical engineering recommendations regarding (but not limited to) soil and rock engineering parameters, soil liquefaction assessments, seismic analysis, frost issues, soil dynamic parameters and site development and pavement design
Liaise with contractors which include conducting site inspection and supervision, and Quality Assurance and Quality Control inspections
Prepare cost estimates and proposals for a variety of stakeholders
Oversee the work of engineering interns and technologists and technicians and provide guidance and mentoring to more junior staff
Monitor progress on all projects to ensure timelines, targets and budgets are being met
Ensure proper project planning is in place for the scheduling, staffing and resourcing of teams in order to ensure the effective execution of projects
Required Qualifications
Experience and Education:
10 years of experience in oil sands mining (open pit) or coal-based geotechnical engineering (a considerable portion of this time should have been in formal technical leadership roles with an emphasis on leading construction design work in an open pit mine)
Experience with development and reporting of performance and construction monitoring reporting to Alberta Energy Regulator (AER)
Registered or immediately eligible for registration as a Professional Engineer with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA)
Civil or geotechnical engineering degree; additional geotechnical education and training in soil and rock mechanics would be an asset
Possess a valid driver’s licence and a clean driving record
Skills and Knowledge:
A solid understanding of AER Dam Safety and Mining Association of Canada guidelines and the regulatory approval process pertaining to construction design in support of mine operations
Proficient with Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint and AutoCAD
Proven project management skills and leadership abilities, including experience developing and managing the performance of professional engineers, and building effective engineering work processes
Effective communicator capable of understanding, anticipating and responding to the ongoing needs of mining engineering and operations groups
Working Conditions
Position is based in Calgary, Alberta at the Suncor Energy Centre with occasional travel to site
